Is Madonna is Thirsty? ... for Latin Music's Explosion, Medellin, and Colabs?
1999 Ricky Martin stormed the Grammys and mainstream audience to the vibrant sounds of Latin music with the song "Cup of Life" the anthem for the World Cup and the term "Latin Explosion", or "Latin Takeover" was introduced to the music scene. Around this same time BIG PUN was blowing up the Hip Hop charts with "Still Not a Player" and George Lopez was killing the comedy scene and was in 2002 given a Tv show "The George Lopez Show".
Its almost as if Latin Explosion was a hot trend or the new hash tag that began to fade out and then Reggaeton came in and muy caliente with Gasolina in 2006. NORES "Oye mi Canto" gave the cosign to non-spanish speaking artists such as Fergie, Nelly Furtado, Akon, Snoop, 50Cent, to colab with the reggaetoneros. Reggaeton boom began to faded out around of mainstream around 2008 due to lack of non-puertorican reggateoneros and stayed heavily concentrated in the Latin Markets. The sound was going through a change where even a sub genre Dem-Bow was introduced but failed to produce a mainstream hit.
Reggaeton seeked towards the rest of South America for help and Colombia stepped in and showed support. Regetoneros were buying properties in Medellin and even Nicky Jam found a away to reinvent himself there. New artists from Medellin such as J Balvin and Maluma came in and with hit after hit and were making a sneak attack in the Latin Market.
Medellin became the go to place for Music videos due to its landscapes, beautiful women, and world wide notoriety. Rap Artists such as Rick Ross, Stitches, Fabolus, and others even filmed music videos there. The sound of Trap was evolving and climbing out the Trap into main stream that even Katy Perry jumped on it, cosigned it for the rest of the mainstream audience with Juicy J and later with the help of the Migos for her "Bon Appetite" song
Is the Trap sound fading or changing? Nope its killing it the Latin Market so big that Salsa and Merengue may be coming to and end for new artists
Daddy Yankee who has been dominant in the latin charts and dueling it out with Pitbull over who has more Latin Club songs and followed the Pitbull formula (sampling classics)
He introduced 90s Cancadian Dance hall Snow Informer to new audiences..
I feel like Daddy Yankee should give some kind of thanks to Drake's reggae sound.
Which brings us to this.
"Medellin"
Madonna and Maluma. When I saw this I get it. Madonna who once innovated the club and music scene is now thirsty for the street club credibility since her incident with the Puerto Rican flag
. She released her new album and got one of the hottest artist from the Latin Scene and Medellin.
The song is about taking a trip to Medellin.
However the video only takes a trip to Studio with dancers and outfits.
She just had to spice up the song and insert "Cartel" somewhere in the lyrics.
I'm guessing that she wanted a video of her looking like Griselda in a mansion.
and did not realize that the Medellin Government will not tollerate that imagery (Ask Calle13)
That or her label doesnt have sufficient funds and wont risk it since they got Quavo (Migos) on a couple of songs.
